Bittern!

Masters of camouflage

I went to the aptly named Bittern Hide in Lee Valley to be treated to a wonderful view of this bittern. Even close to, and with reeds that were beaten down by storms, the bird was seemingly able to disapear at will. Close up they are intricately patterned and beautiful in a way that I had not previously taken in on my more distant sightings.

It seems to me the bittern is becoming more prevalent in the UK - I do hope so. Elmley Nature Reserve, Lavell’s as well as Minsmere, Ham Wall, and WWT London are all places where I am seeing reported sightings on a regular basis. Right now it feels like a privilege to see one - let’s hope it can become far more common place.

This is of course the Great Bittern. My next goal is another encounter with a Little Bittern back in Portugal where I have seen them in the past. They too are masters of camouflage and at looking down their long beaks at you in clear disgust.
